Spent $600 on a laser level for a big foundation layout, but my partner says it's a waste when a string line works fine.

I say the speed and accuracy on a 100-foot run is worth every penny, but he argues it's just a fancy toy that'll break in the mud.

How often are you doing 100 foot layouts? If it's a regular thing for your jobs, the time saved adds up fast. A string line can work but it's way slower and needs two people.

String line with pins works fine if you're doing a small patio or shed pad. But 100 foot layouts for something like a driveway or foundation? Pins get knocked loose, line sags in the middle, and you're constantly checking. For big stuff, a string line is just asking for mistakes. I'd rather spend the money on a laser level once than fight with pulling line taut across a long stretch every time. It's a no-brainer if you do these regularly.

String line only needs one person if you use pins.
