Tried wetting my bricks before laying them for 20 years, then a guy in Ohio told me to stop

I always soaked my bricks so they wouldn't suck the moisture out of the mortar, but a mason I met at a job site claimed it actually weakens the bond over time and causes more cracking later. Has anyone else seen a real difference in wall durability from wetting or not wetting?

The real question is what kind of climate he's in. Dry desert air? Humid Ohio summers? I've seen guys in Arizona swear by bone-dry bricks and guys in Florida say soaking them is the only way to keep mortar from flash-setting. Did he mention if he's using type N or type S mortar? That changes everything about how it handles moisture. Also wondered if he's talking about clay bricks or concrete ones because concrete bricks soak up water totally different.
