Watching a new crew try to lay a herringbone patio in Springfield last week was painful

They kept eyeballing the 45-degree cuts instead of using a miter box. The gaps were all over the place, maybe a quarter inch in some spots. I learned that trick from an old timer named Frank back in '08, and it saves so much time and mortar. Anyone have a go-to method for keeping that pattern tight on a big pour?
