Watching new guys stack corners all wrong at the Ace Hardware lot

I was at the Ace on 3rd street last Tuesday helping a buddy pick up sand. Stood watching two younger guys try to lay a 45 degree corner on a planter box out front. They kept breaking their bond because neither of them had a 3/4 bat on the return side. I walked over and showed them you gotta cut that first quoin brick to 6 inches or the whole corner looks like garbage after three courses. Has anyone else noticed this bad habit with the newer generation skipping the basics?

Honestly, I see this all the time now at my local supply yard. Watched a kid try to fix a corner with just a half bat and it looked like a puzzle piece from two different sets after three courses. Ngl, it's like they never had to learn how a corner actually works before jumping into a job.

Did your buddy have that happen where a guy spent an hour trying to fix a corner with a full brick and a half brick? My friend Mike saw it at a job site last month, kid kept snapping bricks in half until he had a pile of weird sized pieces. He finally laid the corner and it looked like a toddler built it, all wavy and sagging on the return. The foreman came over, just pulled out a tape measure, cut one brick to 6 inches, and it locked in perfect on the first try. Kid just stood there staring at his phone the whole time.
