Am I the only one who remembers when a full cart of groceries cost under 50 bucks?

Last week I spent $78 on just milk, eggs, bread, and chicken at the Walmart in Austin and it made me think about how 3 years ago that same trip was maybe $45, so what are you all doing now to stretch a grocery budget that actually works?

Man oh man, that $78 trip hurts to even read... I remember when I could grab a whole week's worth of food for like 60 bucks and still have change for a six pack. What's been saving me lately is actually checking the markdown section at my local H-E-B for meat that's about to expire, I just toss it in the freezer right when I get home and it's still fine for a week or two. Also started buying the store brand versions of stuff like cereal and pasta, and honestly I can't tell the difference most of the time. My biggest tip though is to just stop buying premade stuff entirely, like those bagged salad kits and frozen meals add up quick when you add them all together.

Hang on, isn't buying meat that's about to expire really just rolling the dice on food safety? I'd rather pay a few dollars more and get something I know isn't gonna turn my stomach, especially with chicken. Store brands are fine but I feel like this whole "just buy raw ingredients" thing ignores that some people don't have the time or energy to cook everything from scratch.
