I finally tried cooking dried beans to save money and my smoke alarm had opinions
So last Tuesday I decided to stop buying canned beans at $1.29 a pop and got a 2 pound bag of dried pinto beans for $2.49 instead. I dumped them in a pot, added water, cranked the heat, and wandered off to fold laundry like an idiot. About 40 minutes later my smoke alarm is screaming, the pot is bone dry, and the bottom layer is welded to the metal like some kind of bean cement. I soaked the pot for two days, scrubbed it with baking soda, and it still looks like a science project. Does anyone have a good trick for cooking these things without me babysitting the stove for 3 hours?
