I was at the grocery store in Portland and saw a bag of dried beans for $2.50.
It made me think about how my grandma used to make a huge pot of bean soup every Sunday for pennies. She'd add a ham bone, some onions, and carrots from her garden, and that would feed us for days. Now I see people buying those little microwave cups of beans for like three bucks each. I grabbed the bag and a cheap onion, and I'm gonna try her old recipe this weekend. Anyone have a good trick for getting the beans to soften up without soaking them overnight?

Add a pinch of baking soda to the cooking water.

Tried that trick once and my beans turned out way too mushy for my liking.
