My barley blunder created a new budget staple

I was cooking a simple veggie soup with the last bits in my fridge. By accident, I dumped in way too much barley from the pantry. It soaked up all the liquid and turned the soup into a weird, thick glop. But guess what? It was actually really good and kept me full for hours. Now I do it on purpose because a bag of barley is cheap and this stew lasts all week. Has anyone else stumbled into a cheap meal like this?

Last week, I overcooked lentils into a thick paste. Tossed in some spices and frozen veggies. It was edible and cheap, about two dollars for three meals. Now I always have lentils for stretching food. Barley does the same thing, absorbs liquid and fills you up. Good find.

Nice! That gloppy texture is perfect for freezing in single portions too, it reheats really well.

Those gloppy soups can be turned into something else entirely, like patties or a spread. @robert246's lentil paste idea would work for that too. Barley gets firm when it's cold, so you can form it into burgers and fry them up. It breaks up the monotony of eating the same stew all week. You end up with two different meals from one cooking session, which is smart for a tight budget.
