My pantry was basically empty on Tuesday, so I just threw a can of black beans, some frozen corn, and a jar of salsa into a pot.

It made this weirdly good, thick soup that fed me for three meals and cost maybe $3 total. What's your go-to 'kitchen sink' meal when you're down to the bare bones?

Honestly used to think you needed meat for a real meal, but a can of beans proves that wrong every time. That combo you described is a total lifesaver, and @hollym82 is right, it's basically the backbone of a good chili. My bare bones move is pasta with whatever is left in the fridge, usually some olive oil, garlic, and the last sad bits of cheese. Turns out the best meals sometimes come from just using what you already have.

That's basically my chili recipe, minus the ground beef.

minus the ground beef" - yeah that's the WHOLE point of good chili honestly. Beans are where it's at. My go-to is kidney beans and black beans together, plus a big spoonful of cocoa powder. Sounds weird but it gives that deep, rich flavor without needing any meat at all. People who put ground beef in chili are just making spaghetti sauce with different spices.
