My roommate tried to make 'fancy' ramen and set off the fire alarm at 2am

Last Thursday, my roommate Jake decided to upgrade our cheap ramen by frying the dry noodles in oil before adding water, something he saw online. He used way too much oil in our tiny apartment kitchen in Phoenix, and the whole place filled with smoke in like 30 seconds. The alarm went off, waking our whole building, and we had to wave a towel at it for five minutes. Has anyone else had a budget meal attempt go totally wrong like that? lmao

Frying dry ramen noodles in oil sounds like a recipe for disaster. That much oil in a small kitchen is just asking for a smoke cloud. What did he think was going to happen?

Come on, it's just a smoke alarm. Happens to everyone trying to cook something new. Not that big of a deal.

Build on that, honestly. I've set off the smoke alarm just trying to make grilled cheese because I forgot to turn down the heat. But frying dry ramen in a shallow pan of hot oil is basically asking for a grease fire, not just some light smoke. It's like he skipped the "learning to cook eggs" phase and went straight to "deep frying mystery ingredients." The alarm going off is the least of it, that guy's lucky he didn't end up with a melted microwave and a visit from the fire department.
