Overheard a guy at the grocery store say he spent $8 on a single bell pepper
He was at the organic section in a Whole Foods in Seattle, and he just put it in his cart without a second thought. That's more than I spend on a whole bag of rice that feeds me for a week. It made me realize a lot of people think 'healthy' has to mean expensive, but my best meals are just beans, frozen veggies, and spices. What's the most you've seen someone overpay for a basic food item?

Used to grab the fancy stuff without looking at the price tag. A bell pepper for eight bucks is a real wake-up call. Now I just get the regular ones and they taste exactly the same.

That's just the organic tax in certain zip codes. Seen it with tomatoes and cucumbers too, where the price is more about the store's rent than the plant. The trick is to find a normal grocery store with a decent produce section, or even an Asian market if you have one nearby. Their peppers are like a dollar each and just as good, sometimes better. Paying eight bucks is a choice, not a requirement.

What makes someone think a bell pepper is worth that much? It feels like paying for a brand name instead of actual food, which is a weird flex. I saw someone buy a tiny jar of "artisan" pickles for $15 once.
