Shoutout to my cousin for making me try canned mackerel

I always thought canned fish was just cheap tuna for sandwiches, but she made a pasta with mackerel, garlic, and lemon that cost about $8 total for four servings. The flavor was actually amazing and it's become a weekly staple now. So, is canned fish like mackerel or sardines a legit budget protein hack, or are you still on team beans and lentils?

Honestly the sustainability angle gets me. Mackerel and sardines are usually lower on the food chain so it's a pretty green protein source too.

Oh, good point @the_robin. Just a heads up though, some mackerel types are actually overfished. Sardines are usually the safer bet.

and the omega-3 thing too, right @the_robin? people go for salmon but these smaller fish have way more good fats per serving without all the heavy metal buildup. i always grab a tin of sardines for lunch actually, mash em up with some avocado and hot sauce. way cheaper than salmon too which is a bonus. what's your go to way to eat them?
