The great bean spill of 2023 at my local food co-op

I was at the bulk bins in the co-op on Maple Street, filling a bag with black beans. The scoop got stuck. I gave it a hard shake. The whole bin lid popped off. Beans everywhere. Like a thousand black marbles rolling across the floor. The manager was cool about it, just sighed and got a broom. But I had to pay for a full pound of beans I didn't even get. Cost me $2.50 for the mess. Now I always bring my own containers with wide mouths from home. No more shaky scoops over those tiny plastic bags. Saves money and stops bean avalanches. Anyone else have a bulk bin disaster that made you change your shopping routine?

Honestly, the real question is why those bin lids are so flimsy to begin with. It's like they're designed to fail the second you apply any real pressure. Makes you wonder if the co-op saves money on cheap hardware, then makes it back on spill fines. That whole system feels set up to punish normal clumsiness. Maybe they should invest in better lids instead of charging for accidents.

Charge for the beans, not the mess.

Right? I had one snap shut on my hand last week, nearly lost a finger. Feels like they buy the cheapest stuff possible.
