Vent: My friend's fancy dinner party in Chicago made me rethink my whole food budget
I mean, I went to this dinner last weekend and the host spent like $200 on ingredients for one meal, easy. She was talking about truffle oil and some special cheese, and I just sat there thinking about my $75 grocery bill for the whole week. It hit me that I've been feeling bad about my simple pasta and bean dishes, but honestly, they taste good and keep my lights on. I'm done comparing my kitchen to someone else's show-off spread. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you saw someone's crazy food spending and it actually made you feel better about your own budget cooking?

That "special cheese" talk reminds me of a guy who spent a fortune on artisanal butter for toast.

Felt the same way after a wine tasting that cost more than my car payment. Realized my cheap home cooking lets me save for things I truly care about.

Totally get the "cheap home cooking" thing. Had a moment like that after buying a tiny jar of fancy mustard. Tasted fine, but my regular one is just as good. Like what mary_kelly said about the butter guy. Feels like they're selling a story, not food. Now I just laugh and keep my grocery money. Lets me actually enjoy the simple stuff without the guilt trip.
