3 years ago I paid $200 for a hostel in Reykjavik. Last week I paid $45 for the same bed.

I was looking through old travel photos last night and found a receipt from when I stayed at a hostel in Reykjavik in 2021. Back then I paid $200 a night for a shared dorm room near the city center. Last month I booked the exact same room for $45 a night on a random Tuesday in October. The trick was traveling during the off season and using a regional booking site instead of the big ones. Has anyone else seen prices drop that much for a popular spot?

The off season thing is real across the board, not just with hostels. I've seen flight prices to Iceland drop by over half in November compared to July, and even grocery stores near me mark down seasonal stuff by 70% when demand dies off. Your mileage may vary with specific dates, but the pattern of paying way less for the same thing just by waiting a few months is pretty consistent.

YEAH that tracks. I read somewhere that Iceland tourism basically shuts down in winter though, so you're trading cheap flights for way less daylight and closed roads.
