Debate: Should you always book the cheapest flight or pay a little more for reliability?

What do you all think - is cheap always the move, or do you factor in cancellations when booking?

Does your cat also judge you when you show up two hours late because you took a gamble on Spirit Airlines? Because mine definitely does, and she doesn't even care about on-time performance. I'm with you on this one. I once booked the absolute cheapest flight to visit my parents for Thanksgiving, and surprise, they canceled that route entirely two days before. Ended up paying triple for a last minute ticket on a real airline anyway, so I basically paid the premium price but had to sleep in jeans for 16 hours. Lesson learned: if you're bringing gifts or have a wedding to catch, just fork over the extra forty bucks and save yourself the gray hairs.

Oh man, this reminds me of the time I booked a $39 flight to Nashville and ended up sleeping in the airport because they bumped me off an overbooked plane and the next flight wasn't until 6am. But then another time I paid extra for Delta and they lost my bag for three days anyway. I guess the cheapest option is fine if you can actually roll with the punches when things go sideways, but if you've got somewhere you absolutely have to be the next day, maybe don't risk it.
