Figured out the hard way that 'cheap' flights to Japan in July aren't actually cheap

So I spent like 4 hours last night (no joke) comparing flights on Skyscanner and Google Flights for a trip to Tokyo this July. I kept finding these $600 round trip tickets and got super excited. But then I started adding in baggage fees, seat selection, and the fact that none of them included meals. After all that, the 'budget' flight ended up being $820. Meanwhile, a regular carrier was $850 direct. So what even is the point of budget airlines on long hauls? Has anyone else wasted way too much time on this math? How do you actually find the real cheap flights without the hidden costs?

Wait you paid $820 for a budget airline to Japan? That's insane lol.

Dude same, I dropped $850 on a similar route last spring and it stung bad. Never again, I'll just wait for a sale or fly out of a bigger airport.
