Hostel in Lisbon advertised 'free breakfast', it was bread and a sad orange
Booked a place in Lisbon for 22 euros a night because the photos showed a buffet. First morning I walk down and there's a basket of stale rolls and one orange per person. I asked the guy at the desk and he said 'breakfast is a concept'. I ended up eating pastries from a corner bakery for 4 days, still cheaper than any hotel. Has anyone else gotten a laughably bad 'free' amenity that made you switch your booking style?

Last year I laughed at people who paid extra for hotels with included breakfast, figured I was smarter than that. Then I booked a place in Rome where the "complimentary coffee" turned out to be a single pod machine in the hallway and you had to bring your own mug. That orange in Lisbon actually sounds like a step up, at least it's fruit. What got me was the guy saying breakfast is a concept, that's the kind of nonsense that makes you stop trusting the word free entirely. Now I just assume any free amenity is either a trap or a test of how low your standards can go. I'd rather pay 3 euros at a bakery and know exactly what I'm getting than gamble on a sad roll ever again.
