Hostel kitchen in Lisbon vs Porto, what a difference

Stayed at two different hostels last spring, one in Lisbon and one in Porto, both had 'free breakfast' listed. Lisbon's kitchen had one sad burner and a toaster that took 15 minutes per slice, so I ate out twice a day. Porto's place had a full stove, a big fridge, and a spice rack someone left behind, ended up cooking 6 of my 8 dinners there. Saved about 70 euros total on food, which basically paid for my train ticket between the cities. How do you guys scope out hostel kitchens before booking, or do you just roll the dice like I did?
