I used to think hostels were the only way to save money on lodging
Stayed at a place in Nashville last fall. Paid $45 a night for a bunk bed. Shared bathroom with 12 people. Guy snored like a chainsaw. Then my buddy told me about budget motels along the highway. Got a private room with my own bathroom near Memphis for $55 a night. Plus free breakfast. Way better sleep. Anyone else skip hostels for cheap motels now?

Motels are the hidden gem nobody talks about. I've had the same experience - paid $60 for a room near Knoxville with a decent bed and my own bathroom, no waiting for a shower. Hostels used to be my go-to but after a few bad nights I started checking Super 8 and similar chains off the interstate. The trick is to book a day or two ahead and scan reviews for cleanliness. You get way more peace of mind for maybe $10-15 more.

Oh man, I tried the motel thing once and ended up at a place where the lock on the door was basically a suggestion. I spent the whole night with a chair wedged under the handle like I was in a horror movie. My own fault for picking the cheapest option on the map without checking the bed for suspicious stains first. But when you get a decent one, it's honestly SO much better than sharing a bunk with a stranger who snores like a lawnmower. I'll take a gritty little motel over a hostel any day now, even if it means I have to bring my own pillowcase for peace of mind.
