My bus ticket got stolen in Lisbon and I had to get creative with a 5 euro budget for the day.

My budget for a day in Lisbon was a single pastry once.

Was that the day you learned to really savor each bite?

a single pastry once" - oh man, that's rough but I've been there. One thing that helped me stretch those moments is ordering coffee and the pastry together, then breaking the pastry into tiny pieces. Dip each piece in the coffee and really let it sit on your tongue before chewing. I did this with a pasteis de nata at a corner cafe in Porto, and that little thing lasted me almost 20 minutes. Also, if you can find a place that does a "tosta mista" for like 3 euros, that grilled ham and cheese sandwich is way more filling than any pastry and still feels like a treat. Sometimes the practical move is just skipping the pastry and getting a proper meal for the same price.
