Overheard a girl at the hostel say she books flights 3 months early

I was in the common room in Bangkok and this girl said she always books international flights 3 months ahead to save money. I usually book 6 weeks out and got stuck paying $180 more for a flight to Chiang Mai last time. Anyone else think waiting longer is better for deals or is she onto something?

$180 more for a Chiang Mai flight? That stings. I booked a ticket to Bangkok once about eight weeks out and the price jumped $60 in just two days. Three months sounds crazy to me too, but I guess if you know your dates and don't mind being locked in, it could work. I just hate planning that far ahead because my whole life could change by then.

And here I thought spontaneity was the whole point of backpacking. Three months out is so far I can't even guarantee I'll still want to go to the same country. You probably lost $180 but at least you weren't locked into a trip back in January when you didn't know you'd be in the mood for pad thai.
