Overheard a guy in a Lisbon hostel say he books flights for 'anywhere under $50'

I was making coffee in the hostel kitchen last Tuesday and this guy from Canada was telling his friend his whole system. He said he just opens Skyscanner, puts in his home airport, and for the destination he types 'everywhere'. Then he sorts by price and picks the cheapest spot that comes in under 50 bucks, no matter where it is. He said his last three trips were to places he'd never even thought about going. It kind of blew my mind because I always pick the place first and then hunt for deals. His way flips it all around. I tried it when I got home and found a one-way to a city in Belgium for $42 next month. Has anyone else tried this 'blind booking' method? What was the weirdest place you ended up?

That part about picking the place first and then hunting for deals is exactly how I used to do it too. I mean, flipping it around like that guy did is kind of genius because it forces you out of your own bubble. You end up in some random town with no expectations, and that's usually when the best stuff happens. I did something similar once and wound up in a place I couldn't even point to on a map, but it was a blast. Makes the whole trip feel more like an adventure than just a vacation.

Yeah that "no expectations" thing is real. But honestly, I've found the best trips are a mix of that and a little planning. Like, I'll pick a random area but still look up one or two local spots to eat or a park to check out. Going in totally blind sometimes just means you miss the cool hidden gem because you didn't know to ask.

Totally, that balance is key. I once found this amazing little bookstore just because I looked up one thing nearby.
