Showerthought: I laughed at my sister for sleeping in a hostel in Mexico City, then I saw her bank statement
When my sister said she was doing 10 days in Mexico City for under $500, I told her she was nuts and would end up in some sketchy spot with no sleep. She pulled up her banking app at the kitchen table and showed me the damage: $14 a night at a hostel in Roma Norte, $2 tacos from a stand down the street, and a $9 metro card that covered the entire trip. My last 4 day weekend in San Diego ran me $1,100 and I barely left the hotel pool. The part that got me was she met 6 people from 4 countries at the free breakfast and ended up on a day trip to Teotihuacan that cost her nothing because a guy with a van was heading there anyway. I'm not saying I'd sleep in a 12 person dorm room at 41, but the numbers don't lie. Has anyone done the hostel thing in their 40s and actually enjoyed it, or should I just stick to cheap Airbnbs?
That guy with the van thing is the real trick. It's not the hostel price, it's saying yes to random stuff that makes trips cheap and good. My buddy does this in his 50s and swears the dorm is fine if you bring earplugs and a top bunk.
