The $39 'guaranteed' hostel booking that left me sleeping at a bus station in Lisbon

My coworker Mark swore by this booking site that promised rock-bottom rates on hostels if you paid upfront and non-refundable. I took his word for it, paid $39 for a bed in Lisbon for three nights back in March. Got there at 9pm and the place had closed down, no sign, no refund, and my phone was dead. Mark still insists I did something wrong, but I think he just got lucky once. Has anyone else trusted a friend's travel tip only to have it blow up in your face?
