Appreciation post: my 12-year-old fridge's compressor died last Tuesday, so I unplugged it, moved all my food to a cooler, and called a local appliance repair guy who fixed it for $180 instead of the $900 I was quoted for a new unit.
Has anyone else had a major appliance break and found a repair that was way cheaper than a full replacement?

Agree with you on getting a quote first. Not all repairs are equal though. That 250 dollar fix from rodriguez.skyler's guy sounds solid if it's just one motor part. But a lot of appliances have built-in obsolescence these days. The whole machine might be 10 years old already. If the main board or drum goes out next year you're really stuck. I've seen people drop 400 on a repair then have the compressor fail two months later. That's when it feels temporary.

My washing machine motor went out last year and a local guy fixed it for 250 bucks. I mean, a new one would have been over 800 easy. Sometimes it's just one part that fails. I get what @olivia_hernandez is saying about temporary fixes, but a good repair on a simple part can last for years. It's worth getting a quote before you just toss the whole appliance.
