My dad swore the envelope method was too old school to work
He told me to put cash in labeled envelopes for groceries, gas, and fun money back in March, and I finally tried it last month now I have $140 left over instead of wondering where my paycheck went anyone else have a family member give advice you ignored for years?

Jump right in and label every single envelope with the exact amount, not just a category. My mom swore by this and I ignored her for five years. Now I write $40 for haircuts and $200 for eating out on each one before the month starts. It's crazy how seeing the cash disappear makes you think twice about grabbing takeout on a Tuesday.

Totally agree with you @kim_hart7, the exact amounts on the envelopes are a game changer. I started doing the same thing a few years back after a rough month where I blew through my fun money on stupid stuff. Writing $50 for coffee and $100 for random junk on the front of each envelope makes it real. Now when I reach for that coffee envelope and see the cash shrinking, I think twice about that third latte of the week. It's like the cash itself is judging you, honestly.
