Pro tip: Getting my car towed from a Denver parking garage taught me to check for height limits

I was picking up a friend downtown and didn't see the 6'8" clearance sign until I heard the awful crunch. The tow and the roof rack damage cost me $480. Now I check the clearance before I even turn in, every single time. Anyone else had a stupidly expensive lesson about their vehicle's size?

Did you have your roof rack on at the time, or was the car itself just too tall? I've seen some garages with clearances that seem to change floor by floor, which is a total trap. That crunch sound is the worst.

Yeah and that's the crazy part, it wasn't even the rack... the car itself just fit by an inch on the first floor. @logan632 you hit on it exactly, the next level dropped like a solid six inches lower, no warning at all. Felt like such a setup, you know? That sound just echoes in there forever... makes me check the clearance twice every single time now.

Man, that uneven floor thing is the real trap (it's always the second level that gets you). I started keeping a piece of foam pipe insulation in my trunk - just in case I have to back out and recheck. What helped me was marking the inside of my sun visor with the exact height of my car, roof rack included. That way I can look up before I even pull in, saves a lot of guesswork. Also if you ever feel that scrape, stop immediately and go reverse - I learned that one the hard way, trust me.
