PSA: I thought cash envelopes were dumb, then I did the math on my coffee runs
I used to roll my eyes at the envelope thing, thought it was for people who can't use a banking app. Then I added up what I spent at the shop near my apartment in Boise, and it was $142 last month, just on cold brew. So I pulled $60 cash for the whole month and when it's gone, it's gone. Two weeks in and I've only spent $31, mostly because handing over a bill hurts way more than tapping a phone. Anyone else switch to cash for just one category instead of everything?
Wanted to point out one thing though, because it's easy to get tripped up here. The cash system isn't just about the pain of handing over a bill, it's that you can't spend money you don't have on you. That's the real trick. The hassle of tapping is part of it, sure, but if your card is still in your wallet and the coffee shop takes it, you can still cheat. Keep the card at home or in a drawer if you really want the envelope thing to work for that one category. Otherwise the first time you're low on cash and in a rush, you'll just tap and call it a slip.
