Same 5 gallon gas can lasted 15 years, new one leaked in 4 months

I was topping off the lawn mower last Sunday in my driveway and noticed that familiar gas smell. Sure enough, the new can I grabbed from Home Depot back in May had a crack right along the seam, dripping onto the concrete. My old one, which I got for $12 at a garage sale in 2009, never gave me a single leak. I ended up patching it with some JB Weld for $6, but now I'm watching it every time I fill up. Has anyone else had luck going back to those old metal cans instead of the plastic ones?
