Showerthought: I tracked every dollar in a notebook for two months and it actually worked better than my $12 budgeting app
I used to put everything on my phone app and never once looked at the reports it sent me. After my card got hit with three $8 coffee charges in one day in early March and I had no clue it happened, I grabbed a $2 notebook from the drugstore and started writing down every purchase the same night. Six weeks in and I've saved almost $200 just from seeing the paper stack up, so does anyone else write stuff down by hand instead of using an app?
Did you find it weird at first writing stuff down again? I did the same thing about a year ago (started with just a cheap spiral notebook from the grocery store) and the first week felt like homework. But what really did it for me was keeping the notebook open on the kitchen counter, so I had to walk past it every night. If I skipped a day, I'd see the empty line staring at me, and that nagging feeling got me to fill it in. The other thing that helped was splitting the page into wants and needs, which made it super clear where the extra money was leaking out.
