My buddy found an old envelope with receipts and realized he'd been paying for a gym membership he never used for two years.

Yeah but think about the cash flow angle for a sec. If he kept paying for two years without noticing, that means he's got enough money in his account that small charges just slide by. Thats actually a good sign for his financial health even if it stings a bit. Most people would catch that after two months and be scrambling.
