The envelope system felt dumb until I actually tried it for groceries in Phoenix
I thought people who used cash envelopes for budgeting were just dramatic or watching too many YouTube videos. But last month I finally gave it a shot because I kept blowing my food budget by like $80 every single week. I took out $300 in cash for two weeks of groceries and put it in separate envelopes for different stores. When the money ran out I just had to stop buying extras or make do with what was in the pantry. It forced me to plan actual meals instead of impulse buying random stuff at Sprouts. The weirdest part is that having physical cash made me think twice before grabbing things I didn't need. Has anyone else here found that cold hard cash works better than tracking stuff on an app?

Totally. Cash has this weird psychological weight that apps just don't have. It's like paying with a credit card hides the real cost until later, but handing over actual bills makes you feel the loss right then. See it everywhere too, not just groceries. People spend way less at farmers markets when they only bring cash instead of swiping a card. Same with bars, I'll drop like $60 on a card but if I only bring $40 cash, I stop at $40. There's something primal about watching the physical money disappear that digital numbers just can't match.
