Update: my no-spend month failed on day 6 because of a $19 waffle iron at a garage sale in Boise
Last month I swore I would do a full no-spend month, zero extras, nothing but rent and groceries. Day 6 I walk past a garage sale two blocks from my place in Boise and there it is, a $19 waffle iron, still in the box. My rule was no new stuff, so I bought it with cash and felt like a fake for a whole day. But here is the thing: I have made waffles 14 times since then and stopped buying the $6 frozen ones at the store. So do you all count a cheap tool that kills a weekly expense, or is that just me bending my own rules?
Tiny purchases that quietly pay you back every week are how most people actually get ahead. My buddy bought a $12 coffee grinder at a thrift shop and now he skips the cafe line and saves more in a month than the grinder cost. Another friend grabbed a used bike pump for five bucks and stopped paying the shop to top off her tires. The money math people miss is the repeat stuff, the little leaks that add up. A cheap tool that plugs one of those leaks is not cheating on your rules, it is kind of the whole point of watching your spending.
