Dropped $47 on a fancy dotted notebook that bleeds through every pen I own
I grabbed a $47 dotted notebook at a stationery shop in Portland two weeks back because the cover felt nice and the paper looked thick in the store lighting. Got it home, drew my first weekly spread with a fine liner, and watched the ink soak straight through to the next page. Tried my gel pens, same thing. Then I noticed the pages were only 80gsm when I checked the back, which is thin for anything wetter than pencil. My $12 Leuchtturm copy handles fountain ink better than this thing. What gram paper weight do you all look for before buying blind?
Paper weight gets blamed a lot but it is not the whole story. A 80gsm Tomoe River page will beat a 120gsm no-name brand every single time because how the paper is made matters more than the number on the back. You got burned by the cover and the store lights, not by the gsm alone. My rule is to carry a cheap fountain pen with me and ask to test a corner page before I pay, and any shop that will not let me do that does not get my money. For buying blind online, I look for 90gsm or higher, but only from brands where people actually post writing samples.
