A retired boatbuilder in Newport gave me a tip about dovetails that I still use.

Oh man, that's the best kind of advice. Those old-timers have forgotten more tricks than most of us will ever learn. It's so cool that a simple tip from someone like that just stuck with you for good. You can't buy that kind of knowledge in a book or a video. It really makes you value the people who spent a lifetime doing the work. That's a great story.

My grandpa gave me a fishing tip that was just wrong for the lake near me. Sometimes the old ways don't fit the new problems.

Right because my grandpa's advice about using spark plugs to catch catfish was definitely going to work in a suburban pond that's been stocked with trout for the last 20 years. I guess the old ways are great if you're trying to catch a fish that went extinct in 1985.
