Heard a guy at the lumberyard say he never measures, just holds the piece up and marks it
Watched him cut a tenon by eye last week for a stool leg and it fit tighter than anything I've done with a marking gauge, so now I'm wondering how much time I've wasted being too precise on jobs where 1/32 doesn't matter, anyone else try working looser on things like cabinet backs?

...and then he probably didn't even clean up his sawdust afterward, which is a whole other level of chaos. I tried the "just eyeball it" method on a shelf once and ended up with a gap you could park a truck in, so maybe there's a happy medium between wizard-level accuracy and whatever I'm doing.

The "just eyeball it" method works great until you realize your eyes are crooked, haha. Maybe the real skill is just getting good at hiding your mistakes with trim.
