Vent: my hinge boring machine drifted 2mm on a face frame job and I can't decide what to do
Last Tuesday I was knocking out a set of face frame uppers for a kitchen in Phoenix and about 14 doors in, I noticed my hinge cups were sitting 2mm off center on the stiles. I checked the setup and the fence on my boring machine had crept maybe a hair from the vibration, nothing obvious. I finished the run anyway and now I've got 14 doors with cups slightly out of position, which means either I plug and redrill every one, or I shim the hinges and hope nobody runs a fingernail along the gap. Half the guys I've asked say just plug them with a dowel and move on, it's an hour of work and nobody will see it. The other half say a cup that close to the edge weakens the stile and I should just remake the doors, even though that's a full day and a half sheet of ply down the drain. Where do you all draw the line, do you fix it or scrap it?
Man, 2mm is right at that line where it's tempting to just plug and pray. If it were me I'd plug and redrill, but here's the thing, do it on a drill press with a fresh cup so you know every single one lands dead on. The shim route only works if you never have to look at those doors again, and kitchen doors get opened a thousand times a year.
