Drove 4 hours to a job in Bakersfield only to find the schematic was from 1985

The building had been rewired three times since that print was made. Spent 2 hours tracing dead drops before calling the office. Do you trust old blueprints or just start fresh every time?

I mean, old prints have their place if you know what to look for. A good schematic from back then is usually way more detailed than the modern stuff they throw together in CAD. I'd rather spend an hour figuring out where the old-timers put their junction boxes than play guess-the-wire with a fresh pull that might be just as wrong.

That back room job in Stockton last year changed my mind about old prints. I used to think a schematic was a schematic, you know? But I spent a full day chasing a short that turned out to be a junction box they moved in 1999 and never marked. The original print showed it exactly where it was in 1985, but the actual box was now behind a wall they put up in 2005. Now I just pull new wire and map it myself, takes the same amount of time and saves the headache. Those old prints are good for a rough idea but that's about it.
