Just read the average cable tech drives over 20,000 miles a year

Saw it in some industry report from last year. That's more than a long-haul trucker in some cases. Anyone else's odometer look like that?

Is that mileage mostly from driving between jobs in the same town, or are they actually sending techs on crazy long routes just to get to the first house? Seems like a lot of wasted time and gas if it's the second one.

Yeah, @matthewsullivan, that reminds me of the time my buddy's truck broke down halfway to a job.

I've lived in a medium sized city for about 25 years now and I see this kind of waste a lot with all sorts of services. Plumbers, electricians, even the guy who cleans my carpets - they all seem to spend half their day just sitting in traffic going from one end of town to the other. It feels like nobody planned for how spread out everything has gotten, so the companies just push the cost of driving onto the customers and the techs themselves. And then people wonder why a simple repair costs a hundred bucks just for someone to show up. The whole system is built on inefficiency and nobody wants to fix it because it would mean changing how they schedule jobs completely.
