Took me 8 months to stop hating fiber splices, one old timer changed that

I used to think fusion splicing was the worst part of the job, just fiddly nonsense that ate up my whole afternoon. Then I was working a residential run in Tacoma last month and this old timer, must have been 60, watched me struggle with a bad cleave for the 4th time. He just walked over and said 'why you rushing it like it owes you money' and showed me how he wets the fiber with a tiny drop of alcohol before cleaving. I thought he was full of it but I tried it and the cut came out perfect on the first try. Now I do that every single time and my redo rate went way down, like from 3 or 4 attempts to maybe 1. I still dont love splices but I get why people who been doing this 30 years are so calm about it. Anyone else got a weird little trick like that for keeping fiber clean when you're working outside and its dusty?
