Just realized my spring caliper setup has been lying to me for years
I was rebuilding a shutter on a beat-up Pentax K1000 last Thursday, the kind you see in every thrift store, and my tension readings kept jumping all over. After three tries I finally put a jewelers loupe on the spring and saw the hook had worn a groove that made it slip mid-measurement. That old caliper was fine, the spring was just seating crooked every time I touched it. I've been blaming my technique for probably 15 years, but it was just an 80 cent part wearing down. Now I file the hook flat and check with a magnifier before I trust any reading. Any of you had a cheap little part make you doubt your own hands for way too long?
