Rangefinder patch alignment ate my whole weekend

Spent Saturday and Sunday fighting a Leica M3 patch that kept drifting after every shim swap, turns out the previous repairer had bent the roller arm slightly. Anyone else got a trick for checking that arm before you start shimming, or do I just need to add that to my standard pre-check routine?
