That old Minolta repair guy told me to stop using isopropyl alcohol for cleaning shutters.
Met this guy at a shop in Portland last month. He said IPA dries out the lubricants over time and causes sticky blades. I thought he was full of it since IPA is like the standard. But I tried his method using lighter fluid on a junker X-700. Shutter speeds actually got more accurate after a week. Anyone else run into old tricks that go against what everyone says online?

Oh man, that line about "IPA dries out the lubricants" is EXACTLY what I've been saying for years. I used to clean everything with isopropyl until a really old camera guy showed me the same thing with lighter fluid. The lighter fluid works BETTER because it evaporates super fast and doesn't leave any residue. I've got an old Pentax K1000 that I've cleaned the shutter on twice with lighter fluid and the shutter speeds are dead on still. Everyone online swears by IPA but they're just repeating what other people say without testing it. I tried both on two beat up cameras and the lighter fluid one runs way smoother now. So yeah, that old Minolta guy knows his stuff.
