Thought paying a guy $80 in cash for a shipping quote was a scam, then he saved me $300
Back in 2019 I needed my mom's old Camry moved from Tampa to Cleveland and a guy at the flea market said he'd find me a carrier for $80 cash up front, which sounded like a classic hustle to me. He came back in two days with three bids, one of them $300 under what the big online sites quoted me, and the carrier turned out to be fully insured with a real DOT number. Has anyone else used a local broker like this, or did I just get lucky with this one guy?
Wait, $80 cash at a flea market in Tampa and the guy actually came back with real bids? That part blows my mind more than the savings. Most of those parking lot brokers take the cash and ghost you, so the fact that he showed up two days later with a DOT number and insurance paperwork says you found a rare one. That said, I would still get the carrier's info in writing before handing over any deposit to the broker next time.
