See it pay off" makes it sound like a sure thing. Sometimes you're just trying to survive the gamble long enough for a chance. Three years feels like forever when you're in the middle of it, waiting for any sign you didn't mess up. The clock moves slow when you're the one taking the risk.

Three years isn't that long to wait for a payoff. Some risks take a decade or more to work out.
