Dropped $1,200 on a resume writer in Chicago and got one interview out of it
Six months ago I paid a resume service $1,200 to rewrite everything. Chicago based, had good reviews, promised ATS proof formatting and a custom cover letter for each application. What I got back was basically my old resume with fancier fonts and a summary that said I was a "results driven professional" three times. I sent out 40 applications with their version and got one phone screen that went nowhere. Then I got frustrated and rewrote the whole thing myself in a weekend, plain text, no fancy layout, and got three callbacks in two weeks. The one thing their version did right was cut my bullet points down to two lines each, which I kept. But $1,200 for that feels like I lit the money on fire. I'm not saying all resume services are a scam, but for that price I expected somebody to actually read my work history. Has anyone here paid for career help like this and actually felt like it paid off?
