Had the worst Tuesday of my career last week

I spent 4 hours in a conference room with my boss going over a spreadsheet I messed up three weeks ago, and he kept asking me why I didn't catch the error sooner. Has anyone else ever had a manager nitpick a tiny mistake like it was a crime?

Your boss is probably getting pressure from his own boss about something and taking it out on you. Sometimes that spreadsheet thing is just the excuse they use.

That phrase "taking it out on you" really hits the nail on the head. I had a buddy who worked at a small marketing firm, and his manager would LOSE it over tiny font size changes in email newsletters. One time he forgot to italicize a book title and his boss called a 30 minute meeting just to talk about "attention to detail." Turns out the manager's wife was going through a messy divorce and he was taking ALL his stress out on the team. Your boss probably has something going on at home or with HIS boss that has nothing to do with that spreadsheet. Doesn't make it right, but it helps to know it's probably not personal.
