I finally stopped rehearsing my answers before phone screens and started writing down 3 stories instead
For a long time my prep for a phone interview was memorizing answers to the usual questions and saying them in my head over and over. After I froze up on a call for a warehouse supervisor job in Reno back in March, a friend who does hiring said most questions are really just asking for a story, so now I write down 3 short ones with a number in each (team size, dollars saved, whatever) and just pick whichever fits. It's way less stressful and my answers sound like me, not a script. Anyone else prep this way, or do you have a better system?
Three short stories sounds great until you get hit with a question that doesn't match any of them and now you're stuck trying to jam a square peg in a round hole. Rehearsing gets a bad rap, at least you know your material cold instead of scrambling mid call. Honestly I'd rather have ten memorized answers and one that's a little stiff than three stories and a long awkward pause.
