I think the 'always take the promotion' advice is bad
Last week, my boss offered me a manager role at our Chicago office. Everyone said to grab it, but I turned it down. The job would have added 15 hours to my week and cut my time with my kids. Three years ago, I took a similar step up and ended up burned out in six months. Has anyone else said no to a promotion and been glad they did?

But is it really that big a deal? People act like saying no is career suicide. It's just a job. You can get another one later. Your kids are only little once. Seen way too many people trade their whole life for a title and a bit more cash. They're never the happier for it.

Totally get that. My buddy took a director title that came with a ton of weekend work (he basically lost a whole year of Saturdays). He said the extra money wasn't worth missing all that stuff at home.
